“This Bible
storybook turned out to be the centre of our lesson presentations”
At
the beginning of June 2007 a children’s camp was held near
Petrozavodsk in Russia. The leaders had ordered 60 of IBT’s
Children’s Bibles for the camp, which also aimed at teaching the
children some English. Below are excerpts from their report.
“Because we were
working with younger children this year we puzzled about what to use
for a Bible. The Bible we used with older students has Russian on
one page and English on the other, but this is too difficult to
read. Then we remembered a Russian Bible storybook we had seen.
Every story is one page with a full-colour picture on the opposite
page. We were informed that the story is very close to the biblical
text and that most stories include a direct quotation with
explanations for hard words. This beautiful hard-bound book is
approved by the Russian Orthodox Church, which is a real plus.”
“This
Bible storybook turned out to be the centre of our lesson
presentations. Our curriculum was The Life of Jesus, starting with
Christmas and finishing with the Resurrection, and every story we
used was pictured in the book. It was a high point everyday when we
handed out the books and the children turned eagerly to the day’s
story. Some children were so enamoured of the book that they would
have been happy to just go over in the corner and read for the whole
week. When it was time to read, almost every hand was up, everyone
wanting to be the reader. We divided up by paragraphs. They read
with great expression.”
”We did not tell the
children that we intended to give them the storybooks. At the end of
the last day it was gift time, a true Russian tradition. We gave the
children some candy and trinkets they liked. … Then we told them
that we had decided to give them the Bible storybooks to take
home. As we handed them out, they dropped the goodies and reached
for the book. Some hugged it to their chests and rocked back and
forth. Huge smile on every face! We feel that this fine and now
well-loved book will continue the work of Jesus in the lives of
these precious children.”
Project of the month
IBT’s Children’s Bible was first published in Russian in 1983.
Throughout the early 1990’s it was Russia’s best-selling book. The
text has now been revised and the pictures improved. So far this
Bible for Children has been published in 34 languages, most of them
spoken in Russia and the CIS, distributed in about 8 million copies
and read by millions more. This book is now being prepared for
printing in Tatar, Lezgi and Khakas. Please support the
printing with your gift this month!
