This translation is like spiritual food to us Yakut Christians

“Allow us to express our great appreciation for your work and help in the publication of the first New Testament in the Yakut language. We are grateful to the Lord Jesus Christ that He made it possible for you to do this translation. We Yakut believers have received this gift from God with great joy and gratitude. In spite of the fact that we know Russian, we think and feel in our native language. Therefore, through your work our Lord is speaking to our souls and hearts. Many brothers and sisters are saying that when they read God’s word in their own language, they understand God’s truths more deeply and fully.”

This message came from a church in the Tomponsk region of Sakha (Yakutia) on 23 April. The first New Testament for the Yakuts (444,000) in northern Siberia was published in 2004 and has been well received. Several other churches have sent grate-ful comments and requests for more books:

“It is better for a Yakut person to read and study God’s word in his own native language - it enters one’s mind and heart much more quickly.”

“There was a lot that we were not able to understand when we read the NT in Russian. But now we have received the NT in Yakut, what a joy! This translation is like spiritual food to us Yakut Christians. The language is accessible, easy and understand-able.”

“God has spoken to us in our own language, the language in which we were brought up from childhood. In our understandable, native language! You can never stop being amazed at how every time you read God’s word God is opening up something new to you. And when you read it in your own language, you understand even more deeply, and the Lord speaks to your heart. It is quite different from when you read in Russian. You are reflecting more with your heart than with your mind.”

“The translation of the New Testament into our native Yakut language is a great joy to the Yakut people and a big step from darkness to light. Having the Scriptures in Yakut is also a great help to the Yakut Christians. It is so clear and understandable when one reads in one’s own language.

In April-May 2007 Yakut translator Sargylana Leonteva and translation consultant Dr David Clark met in England in order to check the whole book of Psalms. They were able to complete the work after 16 full working days. “This has certainly been a memorable and challenging session, and has demonstrated that the interest and reward of doing this kind of work is inexhaustible,” said Dr Clark. “One Sunday at our church Sargylana gave a world premiere of the public reading of Psalm 1 in Yakut, and afterwards one man came and told her that it was so moving that he was reduced to tears.”
