March 2006

“I want my people to read this wonderful book and to get to know the goodness of God”

In an unusually snowy and cold winter for the north Caucasus the Adygei translation team members gathered from far (Germany, UK and Moscow) and near in Maikop, capital of the Adygei Republic, 6-10 February for a consultant session on Psalms. Maikop looked exceedingly beautiful, covered in a thick layer of sparkling white snow.

Unlike the cold weather outside, the atmosphere at the session was very warm, relaxed and highly creative. It was something special to have such a sense of mutual respect and a talent for presenting arguments. Discussion of such key terms as “righteous”, “faithful”, “true” and “hope” was fruitful, and good solutions were found and inserted in the text.

All the psalms had been translated, thoroughly checked and edited, and there had even been some consultation by 2002 when progress on the project was suddenly halted for various reasons. Now the time had come to proceed with a new translation consultant. The Adygei translation team has designated 2006 as “The Year of the Psalms” and will do its best to complete Psalms by the end of this year.

The history of IBT’s involvement with Adygei goes back a long way: as early as 1991 the Adygei New Testament was published. Since then the teams and co-workers have changed. The present translation team consists of two local translators – a famous and respected Adygei writer, and a talented journalist who became a Christian during the translation process – as well as an exegetical checker, reviewers, comprehension tester, stylistic editor, translation consultant and administrative coordinator. The Adygei team is exceptional because it has a trained exegetical checker who lives locally.

In the last few years the team has been working on the Old Testament: 1 and 2 Samuel were published in 2002; Genesis in 2005; and in 2006 we plan to publish a book containing Esther, Ruth and Jonah.

The believers are looking forward so much to having the whole Bible in their language.
“I want my people to read this wonderful book and to get to know the goodness of God,” one of the translators says.
