“The workshop has challenged me to learn more”

In March 2008 IBT Russia/CIS held a basic intensive training course in Moscow for team members who are already working in a translation project - some of them very experienced, and some with little experience. The subjects were introduction to the Old and New Testaments, the historical and cultural context of the Bible, translation theory, introduction to linguistics and exegesis, translation procedures and translation principles. There was special training for comprehension testers and philological and stylistic reviewers. Twelve people from nine different language projects took part in the course and the participants were very positive:

“Nothing should be omitted, every word was useful.” “What I heard during the seminar was a good summary of all the knowledge I have gained during my 14 years as an exegetical checker!” “The workshop has challenged me to learn more, to know the source text better, it has captivated me and made me more interested in the subject of Bible translation.” “I became more confident in myself because I familiarised myself with the Bible context and now I can find my way more easily through the Bible.” “After the workshop I wanted to change a lot in my translation.” “I’m happy that after this seminar I can make my own small impression on my project and help the rest of the team members.” Some participants added: “It is so good to come together from many different nations again – this is what we miss from the Soviet times!”

One of the participants, a linguist of Muslim background from a minority group in Central Asia, was new to Bible translation. When asked what he had learnt at the seminar he said: “I have understood that all the work that is done in the team belongs closely together. It is important to make this divinely inspired book available to the readers. All of us are working with this aim – translator, exegetical advisor, philological editor and comprehension tester. It is very important to have different specialists come and work together in order to make people understand this text.”

“I think that it is very useful to read the Bible,” he continued.” It encourages us to live righteously. We all want to move towards light, towards a better life. This book makes it possible for people to read for themselves and strive for that which is good. This also applies to myself. Earlier everything was chaos, but now my life is being shaped with the help of this book. I have begun to feel confident and purposeful. Now I think that it is necessary to turn to the Almighty. I say: ‘I am your servant, I owe you thanks for all I have, health, life, everything.’ I pray for my son and daughter and for my whole family. That is how far I have come, and it is enough for me now. But I will continue to think about these questions...”
